Application and Utilization of Artificial Baits for Mitten Crab in Barru Regency

Abstract

Crab is an economically important and export commodity for Indonesia. Fishermen in Barru Regency catch mitten crabs from the sea using round folding traps. The method of operation is by setting bait and then throwing it into the sea with a long line system. The bait sometimes falls, or runs out, reducing the catch. The research objective is to examine the application or application of the concept of false bait whether it can be done. The fake bait function can overcome the obstacles of bait that falls wasted or runs out and save bait costs for fishermen. The research method is observation with paired data between fresh bait and artifisial bait, and analysis is done through independent t test. The results of the research for six trips and the t test showed that the catch with the use of fake bait and real bait was not different. Fake bait is more efficient and economical because fishermen do not provide real bait every trip. Therefore, the function of fake bait can be utilized and applied by fishermen.
