“KAPE-KAPE”: A Case Study of Local Coffee Farming Sustainability
Keywords:
Coffee, Local coffee farming practices, Local coffee farming sustainability, Sustainability issuesAbstract
This case study explores the local coffee farming sustainability in Barangay Tigbanaba Sitio-Buyuan Igbaras, Iloilo, focusing on the local coffee farming practices, sustainability issues, and farmers’ recommended solutions. In this study, five (5) participants from the members of the coffee growers’ association in Sitio-Buyuan Tigbanaba Igbaras, Iloilo, were purposefully selected based on the criteria set by the researchers. Data gathered through interviews were transcribed and underwent thematic analysis. Based on the findings, coffee farming at Sitio-Buyuan Tigbanaba Igbaras involves the following stages and practices: 1) cultivating coffee plants; 2) harvesting; 3) coffee processing procedures; 4) coffee milling process; and 5) packaging. The participants identified several issues pertaining to sustainability. In the social aspect, these problems were encountered by the farmers: physical and mental health struggles, security challenges, membership crisis in Coffee Farming Association, less interest of younger generation to engage in coffee farming, leadership challenges and non-compliance issues, and financial struggles. With regards to the economic aspect, these themes were identified: Inadequate tools and equipment, Organizational financial challenges, and Financial Struggles of the Coffee Growers Association. In the environmental aspect, the following issues were identified: climate crisis, combating coffee pests, and safeguarding coffee plants from invasive weeds. To address these issues, the following solutions were proposed by the coffee farmers: medical support, health and social security benefits, improvement of transportation and water access, financial assistance to purchase insecticides and pesticides, additional machinery and additional tools for farming operations, and improvement of facilities.
