Abstract

Festivals play a significant role in terms of presenting cultural aspects and traditions of a place to tourists who give the effort, time, and money to visit, understanding the way of life of the locals. Pasungay Festival is commemorated annually in the Philippines. It is a tradition of the people of San Joaquin, Iloilo, in which the two raging water buffalo, or “carabao,” are fighting in the center field. In celebrating a festival, local tourists’ perception matters, for it will help the place improve its facilities, security, and environment. The researchers conducted the study to determine the perception of tourists who witnessed the festival. The respondents of the study were one hundred (100) local tourists who visit the town of San Joaquin to watch the Pasungay Festival. This study was conducted during the second semester of the academic year 2023-2024. The researchers used a quantitative approach, and a survey questionnaire was employed as a method of gathering data. Results show that local tourists have a “positive perception” towards Pasungay Festival when taken as a whole. The festival remains the cultural attraction of San Joaquin, Iloilo, despite the controversy that it faced four years ago. The Pasungay Festival is now registered in the Philippine Registry of Cultural Property as an intangible cultural property of the Philippines. The local government unit should provide the best services and satisfying facilities to encourage tourists to visit San Joaquin.
