Abstract

Over the years, the significant increase in seaweed production in the Philippines has been driven by numerous labor forces and stakeholders, primarily in Kappaphycus and Eucheuma farming. However, this growth has been hindered by various disease and epiphytic outbreaks, with no biosecurity approach in place. Previous studies suggest that using the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices (K.A.P.) survey method can help develop effective management measures and policy strategies to minimize disease risks in culture farms. This study assessed the biosecurity-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices (K.A.P.) of 253 seaweed farmers in the top-producing coastal barangays of Bais City, Negros Oriental. The analysis revealed that while respondents have sufficient knowledge of common diseases and pests, they are uncertain about how these factors are introduced. Their attitudes and practices towards external, internal, and general biosecurity showed a positive response, indicating a good perception and strategic implementation of possible solutions. However, government intervention and support were found to be minimal. The study recommends necessary training for farmers, collaborative efforts between fisherfolk and the government, and further research to introduce both short-term improvements and long-term goals for sustainable seaweed production. This could lead to biosecurity interventions that support policy formulation, fostering scientifically sound solutions to prevent the future introduction and spread of pests and diseases.
